Intuition

Calculus is the mathematics of change, derivatives measure instantaneous rates while integrals accumulate quantities. Think of a derivative as the slope of a tangent line at any point on a curve, and an integral as the total area under that curve. Matrices are rectangular arrays of numbers that encode linear transformations, like stretching, rotating, or reflecting shapes in space. The determinant tells you how much a transformation scales area (in 2D) or volume (in 3D).

How to Use These Flashcards

First pass: Go through all 20 cards without rating, just flip and read. This familiarises you with the content and identifies weak areas.

Rating system: 1 = could not recall, 2 = recalled with difficulty, 3 = recalled correctly, 4 = instant recall. The spaced repetition algorithm shows cards rated 1-2 more frequently.

Active recall: Before flipping, try to work through the derivation or proof from memory. Passive reading does not build mathematical intuition.

Common Pitfalls

  • Calculus: Confusing the chain rule application, forgetting to multiply by the derivative of the inner function, e.g. d/dx[sin(2x)] = cos(2x)·2, not just cos(2x).
  • Matrices: Assuming AB = BA, matrix multiplication is not commutative, so the order of multiplication matters enormously.
  • Probability: Mixing up P(A∩B) with P(A|B), the joint probability of A and B is different from the probability of A given that B has occurred.
  • Determinants: Forgetting that swapping two rows of a matrix changes the sign of the determinant, this affects the sign of the inverse matrix and solutions to linear systems.
  • Vectors: Confusing dot product (scalar) with cross product (vector), the dot product gives a number (a·b = |a||b|cosθ), while the cross product gives a vector perpendicular to both inputs.

Study Tips

  • Practice integration by substitution extensively: This technique appears in nearly every calculus topic. Choose substitutions that simplify the integrand, and always change the limits when using definite integrals.
  • Verify matrix inverses by multiplication: After computing A⁻¹, multiply A·A⁻¹ to confirm you get the identity matrix. This catches arithmetic errors before they propagate.
  • Use geometric intuition for vectors: Visualise dot product as projection and cross product as area. Sketching diagrams prevents sign errors in 3D geometry problems.
